I have been a massive fan of Jimbu Thakali by Capital Grill since they burst onto the scene years ago. Back in the day, it was my absolute favorite hangout, the undisputed king of the thakali universe, and the ultimate place to be if you wanted your tastebuds blessed by ghee and buckwheat.
Fast forward to today, and the market is flooded. Jimbu is facing severe, cutthroat competition from Mantra Thakali, Daura Thakali, and basically every "This-Thakali-and-That-Thakali" opening up on every corner of Kathmandu.
Nostalgia is a dangerous thing, but I still wanted to try their Kalimati outlet to resurrect some glorious old memories. Sadly, instead of a grand trip down memory lane, I walked into a mild culinary mid-life crisis.
The Food: Where is the Royal Vibe?
Let’s talk about the Thakali sets, because Jimbu needs to seriously work on them. The standard chicken set was aggressively "so-so"—the kind of meal that doesn't make you mad, but definitely doesn't make you write poetry either.
Then came the grandly named Cheli Jwai Thakali Set. For a hefty price of NPR 995, I was expecting the ultimate, pampered, royal treatment reserved for the Jwais (sons-in-law) of Nepal. I expected the staff to practically fan me with banana leaves while showering my plate with affection. Instead, the fish, mutton, and chicken pieces felt like a lukewarm "just try some and get done with it" token gesture. The portions didn't scream royalty; they screamed portion control.
And please, can we talk about the dessert? Gulab Jamun? Excuse me, but you do not get a sugary, syrup-dripping Gulab Jamun in a real, authentic Thakali household! What’s next, a side of nachos with the gundruk?
If I wanted generic wedding-party sweets, I’d go to a sweet shop. Give us the authentic local sweetness, not a lazy dessert cop-out. The entire set desperately needs an infusion of real, punchy Thakali flavors instead of relying on the same old, tired taste they’ve been riding on for years.
The Ambience & The Verdict
To give credit where it’s due, the ambience is always exceptionally nice. Jimbu has nailed the aesthetic. It remains a fantastic, clean, and vibrant little spot for corporate yuppies, hyperactive kids, and families looking for a reliable seating arrangement. The service is polite, but the kitchen needs a serious wake-up call to match the beautiful decor.

A Note of Hope
Jimbu, I criticize because I care. You were the pioneer who made thakali trendy! Don’t let the new kids on the block like Mantra and Daura steal your crown while you snooze on your laurels. Ditch the Gulab Jamun, unleash the true power of real jimbu and authentic spices, give the Chelis & Jwais the meat portions they actually deserve, and bring back the magic that made us fall in love with you years ago. I’m still rooting for you!
