Let’s have a real guff about this national obsession with sending our kids abroad. It’s like a mass migration, except instead of moving to escape a landslide, we’re moving to escape ourselves. Every year, 100,000 young souls fly the coop, and our parents, bless their hearts, cough up a record US$ 1 billion annually. One. Billion. Dollars!
I mean, look at us. We have hundreds of colleges here in Kathmandu with funny, slightly-incorrect foreign names like ‘Liverpool College’ with a logo that's a little too close to the LFC one. They offer ‘foreign college degrees’ right here on New Baneshwor! But apparently, that’s not enough.
Why Not Just Stay Home (and actually learn something)?
Do we really need to send our kids abroad for undergraduate studies? I don’t think so. Stay here! Finish your Bachelors', even a Masters'. By the time you’re ready for a Masters’ degree overseas, you’ll be smarter, more mature, and actually have a chance at grants, scholarships, or even a paid teaching job. You won’t just be another Nepali working illegal part-time hours in a Japanese konbini.
Speaking of which, Japan is a classic. Students enroll in private language schools, which are often just two rooms above a ramen shop (and probably owned by another Nepali!). They struggle, working part-time to cover basic living expenses and hopefully save enough to repay their parents’ 10+ lakhs loan. For Australia, it costs parents Rs 20 lakhs+! The hope is PR and big money, but the reality is often a lot of debt and very few skills. And the UK? Don't even get me started. They’ve tightened rules so much now you can’t even take a dependent. Gone are the days when you could enrol in a school here and there for a decade and eventually slide into PR.
The Math Ain't Mathing (But the Optimism Is!)
The US is another ball game. Green Card? Decades. Luck. More luck. Then maybe you get a work visa, then a GC, and then five years after that you can sing the US National Anthem. 80% go in hopes of settling down, but once they get their papers, the chance of coming back drops to less than 5%. They only come back for Pasni, Bartaband, and weddings—it’s more like a vacation trip.
Let’s do some math: in the past decade, we’ve spent US$ 10 billion. Imagine if we had invested that in their own business ventures! They’d either be Karodpatis by now or, even better, have learned from their failures. We need real skills, not degrees that end up being used to manage gas stations or work in restaurants.
But here's the optimism: we have a Balen government now! Ban all foreign degree mills! No NOCs for private 'funny and fake' schools in Japan, Australia, or the UK. Let's force some standards. We produce 250,000 SEE graduates every year. The narrative has always been about ‘escape’ because a Rs 15,000 monthly job is a joke. But if we keep our money and our talent here, we can change the narrative. We don't have to escape this land; we just have to fix it. We can create opportunities right here, not just 'finding a way to get there' and struggling for life.

हाम्रा बच्चाहरूलाई विदेश पठाउने यस राष्ट्रिय जुनूनको बारेमा वास्तविक गफ गरौं। यो एक सामूहिक बसाइँसराइ जस्तै हो, पहिरोबाट बच्न अघि बढ्नुको सट्टा, हामी आफैंबाट उम्कन अघि बढिरहेका छौं। हरेक वर्ष, 100,000 जवान आत्माहरू खोरमा उडाउँछन्, र हाम्रा आमाबाबुले उनीहरूको हृदयलाई आशीर्वाद दिन्छन्, वार्षिक रूपमा रेकर्ड 1 बिलियन अमेरिकी डलर खोक्छन्। एक. अरबौं। डलर !
मेरो मतलब, हामीलाई हेर्नुहोस्। काठमाडौंमा सयौं कलेजहरू छन् जसमा 'लिभरपूल कलेज' जस्ता रमाइलो, थोरै गलत विदेशी नामहरू छन् जुन लोगो एलएफसीको अलि नजिक छ । नयाँ बानेश्वरमा यहीँ 'विदेशी कलेजको डिग्री' दिन्छन् । तर स्पष्ट रूपमा, यो पर्याप्त छैन।
किन घरमै बस्नु हुँदैन (र वास्तवमा केहि सिक्नुहुन्छ)?
के हामीले वास्तवमै हाम्रा बच्चाहरूलाई स्नातक अध्ययनको लागि विदेश पठाउनु आवश्यक छ? मलाई यस्तो लाग्दैन. यहाँ बस्नुहोस्! आफ्नो ब्याचलर पूरा गर्नुहोस्, मास्टर्स पनि। जब तपाईं विदेशमा मास्टर्स डिग्रीको लागि तयार हुनुहुन्छ, तपाईं स्मार्ट, अधिक परिपक्व हुनुहुनेछ, र वास्तवमा अनुदान, छात्रवृत्ति, वा सशुल्क शिक्षण जागिरमा मौका पाउनुहुनेछ। तपाईं जापानी कोनबिनीमा अवैध रूपमा पार्टटाइम घण्टा काम गर्ने अर्को नेपाली मात्र हुनुहुन्न।
जसको बारेमा बोल्दै, जापान एक क्लासिक हो। विद्यार्थीहरू निजी भाषाका विद्यालयहरूमा भर्ना हुन्छन्, जुन रामेन पसलभन्दा केवल दुई कोठा माथि हुन्छन् (र सम्भवतः अर्को नेपालीको स्वामित्वमा!)। तिनीहरू संघर्ष गर्छन्, आधारभूत जीवन खर्च पूरा गर्न अंशकालिक काम गर्छन् र आशा छ कि उनीहरू आफ्ना आमाबाबुको १०+ लाख ऋण चुक्ता गर्न पर्याप्त बचत गर्छन्। अष्ट्रेलियाका लागि २० लाख रुपैयाँ+ खर्च हुन्छ । आशा पीआर र ठूलो पैसा हो, तर वास्तविकता अक्सर धेरै ऋण र धेरै कम कौशल हो। र बेलायत? मलाई सुरु पनि नगर्नुहोस्। उनीहरूले नियमहरू यति कडा पारेका छन् कि अब तपाईं एक आश्रित पनि लिन सक्नुहुन्न। ती दिनहरू गए जब तपाईं एक दशकको लागि यहाँ र त्यहाँ स्कूलमा भर्ना हुन सक्नुहुनेछ र अन्ततः पीआरमा स्लाइड गर्न सक्नुहुनेछ।
गणित गणित छैन (तर आशावाद छ!)
अमेरिका अर्को बल खेल हो। ग्रिनकार्ड? दशकौं। भाग्य । अधिक भाग्य। त्यसोभए हुनसक्छ तपाईंले कार्य भिसा पाउनुहुन्छ, त्यसपछि जीसी, र त्यसपछि पाँच वर्ष पछि तपाईं अमेरिकी राष्ट्रिय गान गाउन सक्नुहुन्छ। 80% सेटल हुने आशामा जान्छन्, तर एक पटक उनीहरूले आफ्नो कागजात प्राप्त गरेपछि, फिर्ता आउने सम्भावना 5% भन्दा कममा झर्छ। तिनीहरू केवल पास्नी, बार्टाब्यान्ड र विवाहको लागि फर्कन्छन् - यो छुट्टीको यात्रा जस्तै हो।
केही गणित गरौं: बितेको दशकमा हामीले १० अर्ब अमेरिकी डलर खर्च गरेका छौं । कल्पना गर्नुहोस् कि यदि हामीले उनीहरूको आफ्नै व्यापार उद्यममा लगानी गरेका थियौं भने! तिनीहरू या त अब सम्म कारोडपाटिस हुनेछन् वा अझ राम्रो, उनीहरूको असफलताबाट सिकेका छन्। हामीलाई वास्तविक सीपहरू चाहिन्छ, डिग्रीहरू होइन जुन ग्यास स्टेशनहरू व्यवस्थापन गर्न वा रेस्टुरेन्टहरूमा काम गर्न प्रयोग गरिन्छ।
तर यहाँ आशावाद छ: हामीसँग अहिले बालेन सरकार छ! सबै विदेशी डिग्री मिलहरूमा प्रतिबन्ध लगाउनुहोस्! जापान, अष्ट्रेलिया वा बेलायतमा निजी 'हास्यास्पद र नक्कली' स्कूलहरूको लागि कुनै एनओसी छैन। केही मापदण्डहरू जबरजस्ती गरौं। हामी हरेक वर्ष 250,000 एसईई स्नातकहरू उत्पादन गर्दछौं। कथा सँधै 'पलायन' को बारेमा भएको छ किनकि मासिक 15,000 भारु जागिर एक मजाक हो। तर यदि हामीले हाम्रो पैसा र हाम्रो प्रतिभा यहाँ राख्यौं भने, हामी कथा परिवर्तन गर्न सक्छौं। हामी यस भूमिबाट भाग्नु पर्दैन। हामीले यसलाई ठीक गर्नु पर्छ। हामी यहाँ अवसरहरू सिर्जना गर्न सक्छौं, केवल 'त्यहाँ पुग्ने बाटो खोज्दै' र जीवनको लागि संघर्ष गर्दैन।
