Laure & Bad Company

The stage is set, the bass is rattling the very foundation of Kathmandu, and guess who’s back? None other than Ashish Rana, better known as Laure, the man who once made us believe that being a "Laure" meant rhyming about life's hardships instead of actually serving in the British Army like his ancestors probably hoped. It’s a classic Nepali tale: start with a dream of military glory, pivot to Eminem CDs in the 6th grade, and end up as the most-searched celebrity of 2013.

A Trip Down Memory Lane (and Police Stations)

Let’s be honest, his career arc has more twists than a mountain road in Mustang. From the legendary Raw Barz freestyle battles that turned him into the "Nephop" messiah to his stint as a Himalayan Roadies judge, the man has done it all. But then came the "Case No. 420" era, which, ironically, became a bit too literal in 2021 when he was caught by Pokhara police for, let’s say, partaking in some illicit "herbal refreshment". Three months behind bars, a 50k bail, and a public apology later, he’s back to show us whether he’s a changed man or just better at dodging the boys in blue.

The Politics of Rhyme

And because nothing in Nepal is complete without a dash of confusing politics, who could forget when he popped up on Facebook to endorse a Nepali Congress candidate? Because clearly, if you want to fix "deep-rooted corruption," you don't call a task force; you get the guy who wrote "Mero Solta" to film a testimonial. It was the kind of crossover episode nobody asked for, yet everyone watched with a mix of cringe and curiosity.

Will He Stay "Clean" or Just "Clear"?

So here we are, watching him perform again. If he’s truly gone "clean," we might actually see a renaissance of substance over... well, the other kind of substance. If he stays off the naughty list, he could be the elder statesman of Nepali hip-hop, mentoring the next generation of kids who think "autotune" is a personality trait. Or, he’ll just keep dropping tracks like "La Hai La Hai," reminding us that whether he’s in the studio or in court, he’s always going to be the most entertaining show in town.

Ayo Gorkhali—not with a rifle, but with a microphone and a history of questionable life choices! Let’s see if this encore actually hits the right notes.
